William James  - Army Career

William James Armstrong my Grandfather lived most of his life in Derryallen. Tanderagee, Co Armagh, Northern Ireland. The image gallery below is a copy of William James Army Record. It shows various information for instance when he joined and when he was recalled at the outbreak of WW 1. One interesting piece of information shows a letter from his mother Isabella sent to his Unit in France asking for financial aid to help run the farm in Ballyshiel, Co Armagh

Joined Royal Garrison Artillery at aged 18 (He put) on 29 Aug 1902. He was born in 1886 which means he was 16 and Not 18 years old.

Had previously served the 4th Bn Scots Rifles.

His address on joining was Ballyshiel, Clare, Co Armagh.

His trade or calling was Labourer.

He was 5 foot 6 inches & 134 lbs with a 37 inch chest.

Was promoted to Bombardier on 07 Feb 1905 but due to a Regimental Entry was demoted to Gunner on 07 June 1905.

Transferred to Army Reserve on 28 August 1905.

Attested at in Scarborough, Yorkshire. Joined up and medical at Hamilton Scotland.

Was in 17 Coy RGA.

Served in St Helena for most of his initial 3 years with ten RGA.

Was mobilized in Newhaven on 05 Aug 1914.

Discharged 28 Aug at Gosport 1915 having served in 11th General Field Hospital in France. Total service 8 YEARS 351 Days, a total of 13 years with the colours.

Achieved a 2nd Class Certificate of Education as a Clerk.
