THE CANADIAN ARMSTRONG'S

And so had began the Armstrong’s in Canada. Although as far as I am aware at this time 2010 the family I have quoted William Henry Grattan Armstrong, wife and two sons are all dead with no offspring to propagate that line, that’s unless someone knows different, oWilliam Henry Grattan Armstrongr until I can find some marriage detail for Melville or Cecil.

The family initially lived in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada or at least that’s is where they were in 1901, 11 years after their marriage. Melville Leslie Grattan Armstrong was born on 06 Dec 1891; a year after the wedding and Cecil William Richardson Armstrong arrived on 13 Jan 1894. The detail given on the 1901 Census was as follows:

Between 1901 and 1910 the family upped sticks and moved to Saskatchewan to a township, small at that time, called Saskatoon. The reason for this was I’m quite sure was that smallholding's were being given to Canadians to farm to populate that area. Their address in Saskatoon was 318 27th St. West as given in the City Directory of the summer of that year. The entry gave names, addresses and occupations. William Henry’s occupation was given as "Grand Organizer, L O L [Loyal Orange Lodge]. Also living at that address was Melville G. Armstrong, ‘Book keeper’

In the 1911 Town Directory the following detail was noted: The Loyal Orange Lodge #LOL 1801 met "1st and 3rd Tuesdays at Oddfellows Hal and that its Secretary was W. Armstrong. Cecil is also listed in the 1911 directory, as a clerk. Both William and Melville Armstrong appear in a group photo of members of the "First Grand Black Chapter of Saskatchewan" (the "Royal Black Knights") taken in Saskatoon in 1911. I am pleased that Jeff O’Brien has forwarded me the two images displayed on the web page and elsewhere on the site. My family who have seen William Henry’s image has remarked there is a resemblance between him & myself. Judge for yourself.

On the 1911 Canadian Census the following detail was recorded for the family.

By 1914 war was in the air in Canada as the mother country Great Britain was at war with Germany and many young Canadians especially those with an Irish /British background wanted to do their bit. The Orange Order in Canada was especially keen to participate in this huge adventure. Melville & Cecil were to follow this path.
